We Are Living in 1984
Written by UAF Contributor Jane Darcy
Orwell’s groundbreaking novel 1984 is regarded as one of the best novels of our time. Published in 1949, it illustrates a post nuclear dystopian society in which the government controlls every aspect of human life. The protagonist, Winston, works in the Ministry of Truth revising historical records, deleting references to those who have been “unpersoned.” Also of major importance in the novel is the controlled language of Newspeak. Newspeak is a language of restricted grammar and limited vocabulary meant to limit freedom of thought. You no longer have to read fiction to explore these themes, as they are currently fixtures of our present reality.
Last week, Google whistleblower Zach Vorhies mentioned an interesting tidbit during an interview with InfoWars reporter Owen Shroyer regarding a tweet President Trump made back in May 2017:
“Despite the negative press covfefe.”
This tweet sparked a firestorm of reporting, many speculating that President Trump had misspelled his tweet or was tweeting nonsense. Some went so far as to speculate on his mental capabilities following the tweet. Mr. Vorhies let it drop that covfefe is actually an Arabic word and that Google had deleted the word from its translator following the tweet.
On Tuesday, Twitter user Tiffany FitzHenry tweeted and interesting thread pertaining to this information. She was able to investigate the Google document dump and found evidence that Google had, in fact, deleted a word from existence to make President Trump appear crazy.
“TOP BOMBSHELLS OF THE GOOGLE LEAK
Documents reveal Google raced to remove the Arabic word Covfefe from virtual existence in the hours and days following Donald Trump’s infamous tweet.”
“Leaked documents, titled ‘covfefe Translate Easter egg,’ reveal how Google raced to scrub the Arabic word “covfefe” and it’s meaning “I will stand up.” According to the document they knew the meaning of the Arabic word. Despite that, they set out to replace it with a shrug emoji.”
A few months following the covfefe tweet, in October 2017, CNN began discussing deposing Donald Trump using the 25th Amendment. This amendment allows for the removal of the President should the Vice President and cabinet members declare the President is unfit to discharge the powers of the office.
In essence, Google employed Newspeak to delete a work from existence, leading to discussion of removing the duly elected President of the United States from office due to his apparently insufficient mental capabilities. This is very sinister, indeed.
