The Russians have released video footage of a nuclear device. The bomb exploded 13,000 feet above the ground but caused seismic shocks equal to 5.0 on the Richter scale. The bomb weighed 60,000 pounds. It had been built and tested while the US and Russia were still in an arms race. One town 34 miles from the blast was leveled to the ground.
The video footage was just recently released but actually occurred years ago. That bomb would have destroyed Manhattan and some of the outlying areas as well. That one bomb was stronger than all the munitions used in WWII combined multiplied by ten. That is some powerful bomb. The bomb was 26 feet long and had a diameter of seven feet.
The BBC reported:
“In the village of Severny, some 55km (34 miles) from Ground Zero, all houses were completely destroyed. In Soviet districts, hundreds of miles from the blast zone, damage of all kinds – houses collapsing, roofs falling in, damage to doors, windows shattering – were reported. Radio communications were disrupted for more than an hour. The blast wave from Tsar Bomba caused the giant bomber to plummet more than 1,000m (3,300ft) before the pilot could regain control.”
The blast was so powerful that the bomb was equipped with a parachute. That gave the pilot dropping the bomb with enough time to avoid being killed by the blast. Even with the parachute, the blast affected the bomber.
The mushroom cloud was 42 miles high. That would be seven times higher than Mount Everest. The scary part is the bomb was designed to give off a yield of 100 megatons, They replaced some of the layers of uranium with sheets of lead. That reduced the yield to just 57 megatons. Imagine what would have happened if the didn’t do that.
The BBC added:

“Before it was ready to be tested, the uranium layers that would have helped the bomb achieve its enormous yield were replaced with layers of lead, which lessened the intensity of the nuclear reaction.”
The Barents Observer, a Norwegian publication, reported:
“After the Tsar Bomba and other thermonuclear tests on Novaya Zemlya and by the United States in the Pacific, the two superpowers realized the craziness of conducting atmospheric tests with huge radioactive fallouts, In 1963, the United States and the Soviet Union signed the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty banning tests in the atmosphere, outer space and underwater.”
Here is a video of five nuclear explosions:
This demonstrates just why we have to avoid a nuclear war that neither side could win. The Russian bomb was powerful but so are ours. Just one bomb can destroy an entire city. And worst of all imagine how much radiation will affect not only the warring countries but every country in the world. Nuclear weapons are merely a deterrent, but a country like Iran might use them.
If Iran chooses not to, they could still give the terrorists that they sponsor a bomb. Although, I would imagine it would be limited in power. They would have to be careful so that the device cannot be traced back to them. They could not afford to be tied to the bombing.
