Will is “the guy with dreads”. It may seem funny, but it is the main thing people remember me by and how they describe me to others. It’s a feature that sets me apart in my industry and makes me recognizable. Sure, it’s a conversation starter, but it’s also now a part of who I am.
Little did I know that God would use the thing that I know sets me apart, to broaden my being, and use it to become something bigger than myself.
My cousin was diagnosed with cancer at a young age. None of it became REAL to me until she began losing her hair.
It was devastating watching someone I loved not only go through this tough disease but to then have to suffer through the emotional devastation of losing one of the things that makes you, you; your hair.
It was at that moment I realized just how lucky and how priceless it was to simply have hair.
Today, too many children are facing the emotional turmoil that comes with hair loss at a heartbreakingly young age. Can you imagine what that does to a little heart?
The story that hit me the hardest and drives me to live out this mission was of a little girl named Rio, a 12-year-old with hair loss. She was ridiculed and bullied at school and sadly, she committed suicide. God rest her precious soul. And the worst part about it? There are thousands of children experiencing it right now that are juggling with those very thoughts.
The good news is there is a way to help ease their pain, build their confidence, and help them avoid losing themselves.
I went on the hunt looking for how I could make a difference and I found a charity called https://childrenwithhairloss.us/ that was doing something for this very cause.
I reached out to them immediately to become a supporter.
Since then, ChildrenWithHairLoss and I have joined hands.
Our organization recognizes that no one needs hair to be beautiful. We want to reverse the stigma that comes along with hair loss. But we also know children deserve to feel good about themselves.
That’s why we joined their mission.
We are now selling ‘Beating HeArTs’ hats as a symbol for everyone who has or knows a child that struggles with hair loss from cancer treatments, alopecia, burns, trichotillomania, or hair loss of ANY kind.
We know the emotional toll this takes on families of children struggling with hair loss.
We see you. And we care.
This hat serves as a reminder for families of those struggling, that they are not alone.
Together we can help save the Rio’s of the world.
This is our tribe / These are my warriors.
We want to make sure everyone we come across feels seen and heard in their struggles with hair loss, and we take pride in doing everything in our power to help. Contribute to our mission by purchasing a Beating HeArTs hat. As always, a portion of your purchase goes to our partner charity ChildrenWithHairLoss. Together, we can be the difference!
If you haven’t already, please join my Facebook group at Connect with Will. There we will be sharing our journey in helping these children.
