In many cities an increase of 139% in murders might not be so bad but when a city hits an increase of 139% in Chicago where the numbers were already extraordinarily high,m it is a major cause for concern. Mayor Lori Lightfoot blames gun crime in Chicago on states such as Indiana where it is much easier to buy a gun than in Chicago, where gun stores are banned.

What she fails to mention is that no matter where you buy your gun, you must undergo a background check and that those states such as Indiana do not have the same murder problem as Chicago has, so gun availability is not the problem.

Murders in Chicago in 2019 was at a high of 44 people. In July of 2020, that number increased to 105. Shootings in July of 2019 was 232 and in July of 2020, they were at 406. Any way you slice it, Chicago murders are going through the roof in Lori Lightfoot’s Chicago.

Over a longer time frame from January 1st through July of 2019 compared to the same time frame in 2020, the increase in murders is at 51%.  The number of shootings and murders have actually gotten higher since rioting and looting after the death of George Floyd.

There is a reason why some cities and states with crunching gun control sees more shootings than in states where it is much easier to buy a gun. In gun controlled cities and states, criminals know the chances a law abiding citizen with a gun is infinitesimal. But in states with lax control criminals are deterred by the fact that potential victims could have a gun are much greater.

From Breitbart News

According to The Hill, Lightfoot told CNN, “Our gun problem is related to the fact that we have too many illegal guns on our streets, 60 percent of which come from states outside of Illinois.”

She added, “We are being inundated with guns from states that have virtually no gun control, no background checks, no ban on assault weapons — that is hurting cities like Chicago.”

Lightfoot did not mention that the Chicago area already has an “assault weapons” ban via a Cook County ordinance. Nor did she mention background checks are a federal requirement, mandated for all retail gun sales in every state of the Union, whether that is Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, or California.
