If you are as over the hill and halfway across the valley as I am, you must be able to remember Dick Van Dyke. He was in movies like Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and television shows like The Dick Van Dyke Show and Diagnosis Murder. He is now 96-years-old and he can still sing and dance remarkably well for a man his age. He made the video with his 50-year-old wife, Arlene Silver.
Silver fronts Arlene & the Vantastix. Other members of the band are backup singers Bryan Chadima, Eric Bradley, and Mike Mendyke. In the recent video, Van Dyke does what he has always done best, singing and dancing. I’m 30 years younger than he is and if I tried doing the same dance, I would be in traction for a month. Since Monday, it has been viewed 110,000 times.
Silver is a producer and a former Hollywood makeup artist. They were married min 2012 and will be celebrating 10 years of wedded bliss later this month. And they sa8id it would never last. Oh, wait. They said he’d never last. He fooled you again.
Van Dyke, an entertainment staple for decades, is most known for his roles in 1964’s “Mary Poppins,” 1968’s “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” and TV’s “Dick Van Dyke Show,” which ran from 1961 to 1966.
In 2013, Van Dyke told Parade that he loves to join his wife in her creative endeavors and has been performing with barbershop quartet the Vantastix since 2000.
“It’s kind of my retirement amusement,” he said. “I don’t play golf. I have more fun singing and dancing.”
Of his coupling with Silver, Van Dyke said, “It’s one of the smartest moves I ever made. She makes me happy. She’s very mature for her age and I’m very immature for my age, so it’s just about right!”
