Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, recently made the historic decision to take action against the gun industry by permitting citizens, and local government, as well as the state attorney general, to sue gun manufacturers when people use their weapons to kill others.
Here’s what I see happening: While Californians may be able to sue gun makers for “neglect” by producing firearms that are “abnormally dangerous and likely to create an unreasonable risk of injury to public health and safety in California,” that doesn’t imply they’ll succeed in those lawsuits.
This is not something we do to automakers even though many people die from car accidents every year. The Democrats frequently spread the myth that the only industry in which individuals cannot sue is the one that deals with firearms. We all know that this isn’t true and we all know what the other industry is that you cannot sue. Even in his video, Gavin Newsom mentions such propaganda.
Irresponsible gun manufacturers and distributors can no longer hide from the mass destruction they have caused in California. With @AsmPhilTing‘s bill, victims of gun violence can go to court and hold the makers of these deadly weapons accountable. pic.twitter.com/aEskHjQ5hs

A semi-automatic weapon is not an abnormally unreasonable weapon that presents unreasonable risk to public health. It’s the people that pose the threat.
Are his bodyguards still going to carry semi-automatic weapons? Of course, they are. Why is that? Because he knows they offer good protection. Well, then the argument will be made that these are highly trained professionals who have been properly vetted and have been determined not to pose a risk.
If that’s the case, then why not just do that with other people?
I think that all this is going to amount to is a big nothingburger. It’ll be a tool that Newsom can use for his next campaign, whether that be another run at California Governor or a run for president in 2024, which has been alluded to at time. Let’s hope that this doesn’t happen.
