On Sunday, Jeh Johnson, the former Secretary of Homeland Security said during an appearance on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” that he is “concerned” that the January 6 Committee may have “overreached” when they used former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson to say there was an incident with former President Donald Trump grabbing at the steering wheel inside a vehicle.
Johnson served during the Obama administration and called the committee hearings a “profile in courage among women” and lauded the hearing for being “choreographed exceptionally well for the attention span of the average American in 2022.” I guess that’s thanks to the ABC producer the Democrats hired to help them out.
The former Homeland Security Secretary then added, “I’m concerned as the former federal prosecutor in me – that gets you a lot of cred these days on television – I’m concerned that the committee may have overreached on the incident in the vehicle.”
Gee, ya think? The two Secret Service agents were hopping mad about Hutchinson’s testimony where she said Trump grabbed the steering wheel inside the vehicle to direct the SUV toward the Capitol building after the agents told him they could not take him there, and both agents wanted to testify to the fact that it never happened. Hutchinson herself said she heard it secondhand, which would be thrown out of a courtroom instantly, and the lawyers might be reprimanded for pulling such a stunt.
Johnson said the story “was colorful, it was vivid, it was collateral to the central charge, and it was secondhand hearsay.”
Trump denied the story after Hutchinson’s testified. Numerous news networks reported that the former White House Deputy Chief of Staff and Secret Service Agent Tony Ornato said it never happened and he wanted to testify under oath to claim it.
It sounds to me like Hutchinson was either coached, threatened, or both by Democrats on the committee. RINO Liz Cheney actually hugged Hutchinson after her testimony. Who would do that?
Johnson argued that he would have gone to the source [Secret Service agents or the person who relayed the story to Hutchinson] and verified the story before making it public.
“The committee perhaps knows something that the rest of us don’t know. But before I went out with the second-hand hearsay, which is going to get a lot of attention, I’d want to know what the first-hand witness has to say,” he said.
The problem is the Democrats didn’t care to be honest about it. The goal was to trash Trump by any means possible. Getting Hutchinson to tell lies during her testimony, which is essentially what she did, is despicable. Numerous things she said were debunked already.
“Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd said that Hutchinson’s version of the story was really a “third-hand account.”
“I think by the time she told us the story was technically, we’re in our third version. It’s a third-hand account,” he said.
“It depends on how you interpret hearsay. But, you know, that testimony would not have been admissible in a courtroom,” Johnson added.
“And as you know, secret service agents don’t normally talk about what they see, what they hear from their protectees. I was a protectee of the secret service for three years. And they have to be in a position to hear and see all kinds of very sensitive things,” he said, which cast more doubt on Hutchinson’s testimony.
