As ‘Defund the Police’ Movement Grows, so does Gun Ownership for Black Americans

At a time of Democrat attacks on the National Rifle Association, and the increase in violent uprisings by far-left activists, as well as a radical left movement to defund local police departments, it is noteworthy that there is a general national surge in the purchase of firearms and an increase in concern for local police departments from the Black Community.

According to The Brookings Institution, “nearly 3 million firearms had been purchased since March when the public health crisis caused the shut down of major cities across the U.S.”

The research also shows that since March 13, when President Donald J. Trump first declared the viral outbreak a “national emergency”, firearm sales increased significantly over the next two weeks climbing as high as 176,000 orders on March 16 alone.

In the month of March, there were an additional 700,000 firearms bought more than usual. The data showed that the number increased again with a 50% increase for June sales around the time the protests over police brutality began to take over the nation.

Black Enterprise reported Saturday, “The protests over the death of George Floyd and others at the hands of law enforcement have sparked a surge in gun sales among Black Americans who have seen the highest increase since the beginning of the year.”

Many Democrats see this increase in gun sales as a further opportunity to cause division between groups of gun owners.

However many minorities agree with other gun owners on the importance of self-defense.

“Self-preservation is a universal law. We should be able to protect ourselves,” Gahiji Manderson, a member of the Hudson Valley Nubian Gun Club, told Reuters.

Democrats have started a new campaign to destroy the NRA, bring a lawsuit to meant to dismantle the powerful Conservative lobby group, from the state of New York.

Black gun owners have been vocal about the importance of ownership.

“The highest overall firearm sales increase comes from Black men and women, who show a 58.2 percent increase in purchases during the first six months of 2020 versus the same period last year,” said Jim Curcuruto, director of research and market development for National Shooting Sports Foundation.

“Bottom line is that there has never been a sustained surge in firearm sales quite like what we are in the midst of,” Curcuruto said.

Ironically at the same the gun sales figures were shown, a Gallup poll about defunding the police that indicated Black Americans don’t want to see police numbers reduced in their neighborhoods, came out.

“When asked whether they want the police to spend more time, the same amount of time or less time than they currently do in their area, most Black Americans—61 percent—want the police presence to remain the same,” the Gallup report stated.

Those numbers are similar to the 67 percent of all adults who preferred about the same number of cops; this included 71 percent of white Americans.

Also, 20 percent of Black Americans said they wanted more police presence compared to 19 percent who wanted less. In total, 81 percent of Black Americans want police presence to remain the same or increase.
