Is anyone surprised that trust in the news media has dropped to the second lowest level in half a century? Does it shock you to hear that sixty percent of the American people say they have little to zero trust in the news media, with the least overall coming from Republicans? Well, that’s what an annual Gallup survey shows.
Only 9 percent of people polled have a ”great deal” of trust and only 31 percent have a ”fair amount,” according to the Gallup poll. That question was first asked by Gallup in 1972 and they have been polling the public the same way annually since 1997.
When asked to specify the amount of “trust and confidence” people surveyed had in mass media, 33 percent said “none at all,” that’s where I am. That 33 percent is a record in the 48 years the poll has been run, and is 4 points higher than the last lowest rating back in 2017. According to the survey, 27 percent said “not very much.”
I don’t consider Newsmax, One America News, and some online news sites not affiliated with the mainstream news media as mass media. Fox News has gone left-wing liars as well save Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham. The difference there is those three are not news people, they are opinion, yet CNN and MSNBC call their opinion people news anchors. Drudge Report also took a left turn some time ago.
Naturally, Republicans were the least trusting of news media overall. Only 10 percent expressed a “great deal” or “fair amount” of trust, which is 5 percent lower than last year. Independents are at 36 percent, which is the same as last year.
Meanwhile, 73 percent of Democrats say they have a “great deal” or “fair amount” of trust.
The disparity between parties makes sense. Republicans have watched Fake News channels like CNN and MSNBC and newspapers like the New York Times and the Washington Post repeatedly lie every day of the week for years. These news outlets have attacked Donald Trump every day for four years with lies. They lied every day about Russian collusion, calling the president a traitor to his country, claiming he was a Russian asset of Vladimir Putin, and after 3 years and four separate investigations, including a Special Counsel investigation, all of which have come up with no evidence whatsoever, these leftist news outlets still have not apologized for all the nastiness and vitriolic reporting they did on that hoax. In fact, the New York Times and Washington Post won Pulitzer prizes for reporting on the Mueller investigation. And they have not given back the award or the cash!
Is it any wonder then that Republican trust in the reporting of news has dropped from 32 percent in 2015, with independents averaging below 40 percent for the past 11 years? Nearly 60 percent of Republicans now say they have no trust at all in the news, a 10 percent increase since last year. Independents come in at 35 percent who have no trust at all, which is a a 5 jump increase from last year.
Is there any wonder to this? The news media censored anything that made the Democrats look bad and anything that made Donald Trump look good. In the face of watching recent state legislature hearings where whistleblowers testified to witnessing massive election fraud, the news networks continually called them all conspiracy theories. They insult President Trump for his attempts to have state election results overturned due to election fraud.
The survey coincides with Gallup’s poll that was released back in August showing 83 percent of Americans saw a ”great deal” or ”fair amount” of political bias in the reporting of news.
”The political polarization that grips the country is reflected in partisans’ views of the media, which are now the most divergent in Gallup’s history,” the company wrote. ”Recent Gallup/Knight Foundation polling has shown that although Americans increasingly see bias in news coverage, they nonetheless believe that an independent media is key to democracy.”
The mainstream news media, along with Fake News cable channels are where democracy goes to die.
